we advise the right solution
Safe Installation & Safe Opening Across Rutland
Inta-Lock provides two distinct safe services. Whether you need a safe professionally installed or need access to a locked safe, we have the skills and equipment to help.
A safe that is not correctly installed provides significantly less protection than one that is properly secured. Many domestic safes are lightweight enough to be carried away by burglars unless they are bolted to a solid floor or wall. Inta-Lock supplies quality safes and installs them correctly — ensuring the safe is fixed, concealed where possible and correctly rated for the items you intend to store.
Before recommending a safe, we discuss what you need to store — cash, jewellery, documents, passports, firearms or medication — as different item types have different insurance requirements and safe rating requirements. The Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SVTA) publishes guidance on safe ratings that we follow.
Safe opening is a specialist skill that requires the right technique for the specific safe type and the reason for the lockout. Inta-Lock's first approach is always non-destructive — using manipulation, override codes, specialist bypass tools or decoding techniques to open the safe without cutting or drilling.
Non-destructive opening is possible in many situations and leaves the safe fully intact and re-usable. Where it is not possible — for example with high-security safes where all conventional methods have been exhausted — we advise you clearly in advance before any cutting is undertaken. We always recommend obtaining a combination reset after any opening.
Safe Types — What Inta-Lock Can Install & Open
Different safes suit different purposes. Inta-Lock advises on the correct type for your specific requirements before any purchase or installation.
A Safe Is Only Secure If It's Correctly Installed
Many homeowners purchase a safe from a retailer and simply place it in a cupboard or under a bed. This provides significantly less protection than a correctly installed safe — and may invalidate your insurance coverage for the items inside.
The majority of residential safes weighing under 300kg can be carried away by two people in under a minute if they are not secured to the structure of the building. A burglar does not need to open the safe on site if they can simply take it away. Floor-fixing or wall-fixing is essential for any safe that is expected to provide real security.
Insurance companies that specify a safe for valuable contents coverage will typically require it to meet a specific European safe standard and to be correctly fixed. The Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SVTA) and the NNAL both emphasise correct installation as the most important factor in safe security after the rating of the safe itself.
Inta-Lock assesses the proposed installation location, floor or wall construction, access requirements and the specific items to be stored before recommending a safe and installation approach.

Safe Installation & Opening FAQs
Can you open my safe without damaging it?
In many cases, yes. Non-destructive opening using manipulation, decoding or bypass techniques is always our first approach. Whether this is possible depends on the safe manufacturer, model, lock type and the reason for the lockout. We advise you clearly before starting on what approach we intend to use and what the likely outcome is. Where cutting is unavoidable we tell you in advance and only proceed with your agreement.
I've forgotten my safe combination — what information do I need to give you?
As much as possible about the safe. The manufacturer name, model number and type of lock (combination dial, electronic keypad, key lock) all help us assess the best approach and bring the right equipment. If you have any original paperwork for the safe, please have it available. If you cannot identify the safe, photos are helpful. Call 01572 503203 and Matt will advise based on what you can tell us.
Does a safe need to be bolted down to be effective?
Yes, for most domestic safes. Any safe weighing under approximately 300kg can be physically removed by two people if it is not fixed to the building structure. A burglar who cannot open the safe on site will simply take it away to open elsewhere. Floor-fixing or wall-fixing is essential for effective security. Most home insurers also require proper fixing as a condition of coverage for valuable contents stored in a safe.
What safe rating do I need for my home insurance?
This varies by insurer and policy. Most home insurers specify a European safe standard (EN 1143-1) at a particular resistance grade (typically Grade 0 to Grade 6 for residential use) and a cash rating in pounds. The cash rating is the maximum amount of cash the safe is insured to protect — valuables are typically covered at ten times the cash rating. Check your specific policy wording and call us to discuss. We will recommend a safe that meets or exceeds your insurer's requirements. For further guidance, see the Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SVTA).
Can you open a safe that belonged to a deceased relative?
Yes. We handle deceased estate safe access regularly and do so with complete discretion. We will typically ask to see evidence of your role as executor or administrator and may ask for a copy of the death certificate. This is standard practice and not something to be concerned about — it simply confirms that access is authorised. Call us to discuss your specific situation and we will advise on what documentation is helpful to have available.
Do you supply safes as well as install them?
Yes. Inta-Lock can supply and install safes for residential use. We work with quality manufacturers and do not supply inferior or uncertified products. If you already have a safe that needs installing, we are happy to install a customer-supplied safe provided it meets the minimum standard for its intended purpose. Call 01572 503203 to discuss.
