Car Key Replacement in Oakham & Rutland — All Key Types
Has your car key been damaged, stopped working, stolen or simply worn beyond use? Inta-Lock replaces car keys for all major vehicle makes across Rutland and the East Midlands — covering every key type from basic transponder keys through to the latest smart proximity systems. Programmed to your specific vehicle at your location.
Car Key Replacement — Every Situation, Every Key Type
Car key replacement is not a single service — it is a collection of related procedures that vary significantly depending on why the key needs replacing and what type of key your vehicle uses. A key that has been physically broken requires a different approach from one that has been stolen, one that has stopped communicating electronically, or one that came with a used car purchase and needs to be verified as uniquely programmed to that vehicle.
Inta-Lock carries key blanks for all major vehicle makes and uses professional diagnostic equipment — Autel IM608, AVDI (Abrites) and Xhorse VVDI — to cut and programme replacement keys at your location. For the latest vehicle models, our SERMI accreditation (achieved 2025) enables us to access manufacturer security data required for key programming that was previously restricted to dealerships. See sermi.eu for detail on the SERMI framework.
The key difference between getting a replacement from Inta-Lock versus a main dealer is straightforward: we come to you, we typically cost significantly less, and in most cases we can complete the replacement on the same day you call — without a booking slot, without recovery and without leaving you without transport while waiting for parts. For information on key security and vehicle theft prevention, see Thatcham Research.
Why Car Key Replacement Differs by Situation
Every Car Key Type Inta-Lock Replaces
Modern vehicles use five distinct key types. Each requires a different replacement procedure. Inta-Lock covers all of them.
Car Key Replacement — Inta-Lock vs Main Dealer
The case for using an independent auto locksmith over a main dealer for key replacement is straightforward. The functional result is identical — the replacement key performs exactly as the original in every use. The difference is cost, speed and convenience.
For most common key types (transponder, remote, flip) the saving is significant. For smart keys on premium vehicles the saving is even larger. The wait time difference is typically days or even weeks versus same day. And the mobile service means you do not need to arrange transport to and from a dealer or leave the vehicle for the day.

Car Key Replacement FAQs
My key was stolen — what should I do first?
Report the theft to police immediately and obtain a crime reference number. Then call Inta-Lock on 01572 503203. The stolen key must be deleted from your vehicle's ECU before a replacement is programmed — a stolen key still registered to the vehicle can be used to start and drive it. We carry out stolen key deletion and replacement programming on the same visit. See: Lost Car Keys.
My car key case is cracked but the key still works — do I need a full replacement?
Not necessarily. If the key's internal electronics — the transponder chip and remote circuit board — are undamaged, a shell replacement (transferring the working components into a new case) is significantly less expensive than a full replacement. Inta-Lock assesses on site whether shell replacement is viable before recommending a full key. Call 01572 503203 for advice on your specific key type.
My key opens the door but the car won't start — is this a key problem?
Almost certainly. This classic symptom — door opens mechanically but engine does not start — indicates a transponder chip fault. The key blade is operating the lock but the chip is no longer communicating with the immobiliser. Options: the chip can sometimes be repaired or cloned from the original key; or a new chip is programmed to the vehicle. We diagnose on site. See: Transponder Key Programming.
Can you replace a key that came with a used car purchase?
Yes. Used car keys are sometimes sourced by dealers or private sellers without being properly programmed as a unique key to that vehicle. Inta-Lock can verify that your key is correctly and uniquely programmed to your vehicle and, if not, re-programme it. We can also assess whether previous owner keys may still be registered to the vehicle and delete them if required. This is a recommended security step when buying any used car.
