Commercial Lock Upgrades — BS3621 & TS007 for Rutland Businesses

Commercial premises face specific security threats that standard locks are not designed to resist. Inta-Lock installs insurance-grade high-security lock systems across offices, retail premises, industrial units, schools and all commercial property types across Rutland, Leicestershire and the East Midlands — to the standards required by your commercial insurer.

Standard Locks Do Not Meet Commercial Insurance Requirements
< 30 seconds
A standard euro cylinder on a uPVC or composite commercial door can be snapped open in under 30 seconds. Most commercial insurers now require TS007 3-star rated cylinders as a condition of cover. If your premises are broken into through a snapped cylinder and you do not have the correct locks, your insurer may not pay out.

Why commercial locks must meet higher standards

Commercial Premises Require More Than Standard Locks

Standard residential locks are not designed for commercial security requirements. Commercial premises face a different threat profile — higher value contents, regular staff turnover creating key accountability problems, longer periods of vacancy outside trading hours and commercial insurance policies that specify minimum lock standards as a condition of cover.

The most important distinction is the difference between a domestic break-in and a commercial one. A burglar targeting a commercial premises may have more time, more tools and greater motivation than one targeting a home. Standard euro cylinders — the lock type fitted to most uPVC and composite commercial doors — can be defeated in under 30 seconds using the cylinder snapping technique. This is not a sophisticated attack; it requires only basic tools and no specialist knowledge.

What Your Commercial Insurance Actually Requires

Most commercial insurance policies specify minimum lock standards in the policy schedule or conditions. The two most important standards for commercial premises in the UK are:

TS007 3-star — the British Standard for high-security euro cylinders, tested and certified against snap, pick, drill, bump and pull attacks. Required by most commercial insurers for uPVC, composite and aluminium-framed external doors. The TS007 standard is published by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and is the definitive UK standard for euro cylinder security.

BS3621 — the British Standard for 5-lever mortice deadlocks, required by the majority of commercial insurers for timber external doors. A BS3621-certified lock must pass rigorous tests for resistance to drilling, picking, and direct attack. Specified by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) as the baseline standard for insured commercial timber doors.

If your current locks do not meet these standards and your premises are broken into, your commercial insurer may reduce or refuse the claim. Inta-Lock assesses your current locks on site, advises on the correct specification and provides written confirmation of the standards met after installation — documentation your insurer can verify.

Why Upgrade Now Rather Than After a Break-In?

The cost of a commercial lock upgrade is a fraction of the cost of a commercial break-in — including the insurance excess, the disruption to trading, the cost of replacing stolen stock or equipment and the time spent dealing with the aftermath. A break-in through a standard cylinder that did not meet your insurer's requirements adds the risk of a disputed or rejected claim on top of that. The NNAL (National Network of Approved Locksmiths) recommends annual security reviews for commercial premises.

Insurance compliance — meet your policy conditions before renewal, not after a claim is rejected
Deterrence — visible high-security hardware deters opportunist burglars before any attempt is made
Staff & customer confidence — demonstrably secure premises improve trust with staff, tenants and customers
Cost of upgrade vs cost of break-in — a commercial cylinder upgrade costs a fraction of a commercial burglary

Six Attack Methods Defeated by TS007 Cylinders

A TS007 3-star certified cylinder is tested against every common forced-entry technique. Installing one on a commercial door addresses multiple vulnerabilities simultaneously — something a standard euro cylinder cannot do.

Anti-Snap
The most common attack on commercial uPVC and composite doors. The TS007 cylinder has a sacrificial snap point — if a burglar applies force to break the cylinder, the outer portion breaks away while the internal operating cam and mechanism remain fully protected and functional. The door stays locked even after the attack.
✓ Defeats most common attack
Anti-Pick
Security spool and serrated pins inside the cylinder body create false sets that defeat standard picking tools. Picking a TS007 cylinder requires a high level of expertise and significant time — neither of which a commercial burglar is typically willing to invest when faster alternatives exist on unupgraded premises nearby.
✓ Makes picking commercially non-viable
Anti-Drill
Hardened steel anti-drill pins inside the cylinder body resist drill bit penetration. Drilling attacks are slower and noisier than snapping — but on commercial premises where longer periods of vacancy exist (evenings, weekends), a burglar may be willing to invest more time. Anti-drill protection eliminates this risk.
✓ Hardened steel inserts
Anti-Bump
Bump keys use a specially cut key combined with impact to momentarily align all lock pins simultaneously, opening the lock. This technique works on a high proportion of standard euro cylinders. TS007 cylinders have bump-resistant pin configurations that prevent this attack from being effective.
✓ Bump-resistant pin config
Anti-Pull
Cylinder pulling uses a specialised tool to grip and extract the cylinder body from the door by force. The reinforced body and internal construction of TS007 cylinders resists extraction. Combined with a TS007-rated handle and escutcheon (the plate surrounding the cylinder), this attack is effectively defeated.
✓ Reinforced cylinder body
BSI Certified & Insurance Accepted
TS007 3-star is a published British Standard from the British Standards Institution. It is not a marketing claim — it is a formal certification requiring testing by an accredited body. This is why commercial insurers specify it: it provides an objective, verifiable standard that can be checked after a claim. Standard cylinders carry no such certification.
✓ Formally certified — not a claim

Your Current Commercial Locks vs What Your Insurer Requires

If your commercial premises still have standard cylinders or non-BS3621 mortice locks, this comparison shows exactly what you are missing — and why your insurer may not pay a break-in claim.

By premises type

What Inta-Lock Recommends by Commercial Premises Type

Different commercial premises have different door configurations and different insurance requirements. Here is what we typically recommend for each type — confirmed on site before any work begins.

Offices & Business Units
Most offices are fitted with uPVC or aluminium-framed doors with euro cylinders. We upgrade to TS007 3-star Avocet ABS or ASSA ABLOY cylinders. Where timber-framed office doors are present, BS3621 5-lever mortice lock installation is recommended and usually required by the policy. For offices with high staff turnover, we discuss commercial rekeying schedules.
Recommend: TS007 cylinders on uPVC doors • BS3621 on timber doors
Retail Shops & Restaurants
Retail premises typically have composite or uPVC entrance doors with euro cylinders and may also have roller shutters and secondary timber rear doors. We assess all access points — not just the front door. TS007 cylinders for the main entrance, BS3621 mortice locks for timber rear or side doors, and advice on rear door security. Written spec confirmation available for the commercial contents insurer.
Recommend: TS007 front/composite • BS3621 timber rear • Assess all access points
Schools & Educational Premises
Schools typically have a mix of door types — modern composite and aluminium entrance systems, older timber fire doors and secondary access points. Insurance and safeguarding requirements may specify particular standards. Inta-Lock is DBS checked for school premises work and understands the security requirements of educational environments. We assess and advise on the correct specification for each access point.
Recommend: Site assessment across all entry points • DBS checked contractor
Healthcare & Care Premises
GP surgeries, pharmacies, care homes and dental practices have specific security requirements around controlled substances, patient records and out-of-hours access. Insurance requirements typically follow NHS estate security guidance. Inta-Lock is DBS checked for healthcare environments and advises on lock specifications to meet both insurance and regulatory requirements. Safe installation for drug storage also available — see Commercial Safe Installation.
Recommend: DBS checked • TS007 & BS3621 as appropriate • Controlled substance safe
Industrial & Warehouse Units
Industrial units and warehouses often rely on padlocked steel doors, heavy-duty lever locks and access-controlled pedestrian doors. We replace standard padlocks with closed-shackle, shrouded alternatives (Grade 4 or Grade 6 depending on risk and insurer requirement) and upgrade lever locks on pedestrian doors. Commercial contents policies for warehouses often specify Grade 4+ padlock security as standard.
Recommend: Grade 4+ closed-shackle padlocks • BS3621 mortice on pedestrian doors
Commercial Landlord Properties
Landlords letting commercial properties are responsible for ensuring the premises meet the security standards required by the commercial tenant's insurer at the outset of each tenancy. We advise on the correct lock specification for the property type, fit the appropriate locks and provide written confirmation for both the landlord's and the tenant's insurance documentation. See also: Commercial Locks Changed.
Recommend: Pre-tenancy security assessment • Written spec for both parties
How the upgrade works

What to Expect — Commercial Lock Upgrade Process

A commercial lock upgrade carried out by Inta-Lock is a structured, professional process — not a simple swap-and-go. The right lock for your premises depends on your door type, your insurer's policy schedule and the specific risk profile of your location and business type.

Inta-Lock carries stock on the van for immediate fitting, so in the majority of cases a commercial lock upgrade is completed in a single visit with no need to order parts or make a return appointment. We provide written confirmation of the lock types and standards installed, which can be submitted directly to your insurer.

Where your commercial premises has multiple access points — front entrance, rear door, side access, car park gates, fire escape doors — we assess each one and advise which require upgrading and to what standard. An upgrade of only the front door while leaving substandard locks on secondary access points is not a meaningful security improvement and does not satisfy most insurer requirements.

For any additional security requirements beyond lock upgrades — safe installation for cash or controlled substances, key cabinet management or access control advice — see our Commercial Locksmith Hub.

FAQ

Commercial Lock Upgrade FAQs

My insurer says I need TS007 locks — what does that actually mean?

TS007 is a published British Standard (produced by the British Standards Institution) for high-security euro cylinders. TS007 3-star is the highest rating and requires the cylinder to be independently tested and certified as resistant to snapping, picking, drilling, bumping and pulling. When your insurer specifies TS007 3-star, they mean you need a certified cylinder — not just any euro cylinder. Avocet ABS and ASSA ABLOY are the two most widely stocked TS007 3-star cylinders and are what Inta-Lock carries on the van.

What is the difference between TS007 and BS3621 — which one do I need?

These are two different standards for two different lock types. TS007 3-star is the standard for euro cylinders — the lock type fitted to uPVC, composite and aluminium doors. BS3621 is the standard for 5-lever mortice deadlocks — the lock type fitted inside timber doors. Which one you need depends on your door type. Most commercial premises have multiple door types and need both standards across different access points. Inta-Lock assesses all your external doors on site and advises exactly what is required at each one.

Will upgrading my locks require any modifications to my commercial doors?

For TS007 3-star cylinder upgrades on uPVC, composite or aluminium doors: no. Anti-snap cylinders are a direct replacement for any standard euro cylinder — same dimensions, same fixing, no modification to the door, frame or handle required. For BS3621 mortice lock installation on a timber door where no mortice lock is currently fitted: yes, a mortice pocket needs to be cut into the door. Where an existing mortice lock is present, replacement with a BS3621-certified version is usually possible without modification, depending on the existing pocket dimensions.

Can you provide documentation that our locks meet the required standard?

Yes. Inta-Lock provides written confirmation of the lock types installed, the standards they meet (TS007 3-star, BS3621) and the specific doors they were fitted to. This documentation is provided on the day of installation and is suitable for submission to commercial insurers, letting agents or any party requiring evidence of compliance. We are used to producing this documentation and it is a standard part of any commercial upgrade job.

Can you upgrade all our locks in a single visit?

Yes, in most cases. Inta-Lock carries TS007 3-star cylinders (Avocet ABS and ASSA ABLOY), BS3621 5-lever mortice locks and commercial-grade padlocks on the van. For commercial premises with three to six external access points, all locks can typically be assessed and upgraded in a single visit. For larger premises with many access points, we may split the work across two visits. Call 01572 503203 to discuss your specific premises and we will confirm the most efficient approach.

Should I upgrade at the same time as a lock change?

Yes — always. If you are having locks changed for any reason (staff departure, end of tenancy, post break-in), upgrading to TS007 or BS3621 standard at the same time adds only a modest additional cost but provides significantly better security and ensures insurance compliance from that point forward. A lock change is the most cost-efficient moment to upgrade. See: Commercial Locks ChangedCommercial HubContact us
