Car Lockout Service — Rutland & the East Midlands

Getting locked out of your car is one of the most stressful situations on the road. Whether you've left your keys on the seat, broken a key in the door lock, had a key fob battery fail at the wrong moment or simply cannot get the door to open — Inta-Lock responds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year across Rutland and the wider East Midlands.

Car lockout response is fundamentally different from house lockout work. Vehicle doors, locks and mechanisms are more complex and more sensitive than residential ones. The wrong approach — or an improvised tool — risks damaging door seals, window glass, the lock mechanism itself or, on modern vehicles, triggering airbag sensors or electronic systems. Inta-Lock uses professional automotive entry tools specifically designed for vehicle access, used by the same standard of technician as dealership teams.

The NNAL (National Network of Approved Locksmiths) and major breakdown providers including the AA and RAC all recommend calling a qualified locksmith as the first step for a vehicle lockout — not attempting DIY entry, not waiting for a recovery truck that may take hours, and not calling an unverified locksmith from a misleading online listing.

Car lockout scenarios

Every Car Lockout Situation Covered

Car lockouts happen in different ways. Each requires a slightly different approach. Here are the most common situations Inta-Lock deals with across Rutland and the East Midlands.

Keys locked inside the car
The most common car lockout scenario. You can see your keys on the seat, in the footwell or hanging in the ignition and cannot get in. Inta-Lock uses professional non-destructive entry tools to open the door without any damage to seals, paintwork or the lock itself. The most common situation — and the one we resolve fastest.
⚡ Most common — fastest resolution
Key broken in the door or ignition
A key that has snapped inside the door lock or ignition barrel leaves you locked out and with the additional problem of the broken fragment blocking the lock. Inta-Lock carries specialist broken key extraction tools and can remove the fragment without damaging the lock barrel. If the barrel or ignition is damaged, we assess whether repair or replacement is needed and can cut a new key on the same visit. See: Car Key Replacement.
🔧 Extraction + new key same visit
Key fob battery dead or fob failed
Modern cars with keyless entry or remote central locking become inaccessible when the fob fails. The physical key blade (if present) can usually open the door, but the car may not start without the transponder signal. Inta-Lock can gain entry using the blade, diagnose whether the fob needs a new battery or reprogramming, and if necessary programme a new key on the same visit. See: Transponder Programming.
🔋 Fob diagnosis + solution same visit
Keys lost with no spare
If your keys are lost rather than simply locked inside, the approach differs from a standard lockout. We still gain entry non-destructively, but you also need a new key programmed — and the lost key should ideally be deleted from the car's ECU so it cannot be used if found. Inta-Lock can handle entry, key deletion and new key programming in a single visit. See: Lost Car Keys.
🔑 Entry + new key + delete lost key
Central locking or door mechanism fault
Sometimes the door simply will not open even with the correct key — a central locking actuator has failed, a door mechanism has jammed or the interior release has broken. This is not a lockout in the traditional sense but the result is the same: you cannot get into your car. Inta-Lock diagnoses the cause on site and advises whether it is a locking system fault, a mechanical door fault or an electronic issue.
🚪 Mechanism diagnosis on site
Keyless entry or smart key system failure
Modern vehicles with push-button start and keyless entry use proximity sensors that can fail due to battery issues, signal interference, or system faults. When the car does not recognise the key, it will not unlock or start. Inta-Lock has diagnostic tools for keyless and smart key systems and can often resolve these issues on site without a dealer visit. Related: Car Key Replacement and Transponder Programming.

Non-Destructive Vehicle Entry — How It Works

The phrase “non-destructive entry” means gaining access to a locked vehicle without drilling, breaking or damaging any part of the door, lock, window or bodywork. It is the standard that all professional auto locksmiths aim for as the first approach — and in the majority of car lockout situations it is entirely achievable.

Inta-Lock uses professional automotive entry tools — specifically designed for vehicle access — that work by creating a controlled gap between the door and the frame to allow a reach tool to operate the interior handle or door button. On modern vehicles this requires a degree of technical knowledge about the specific door construction and sensor placement to avoid any risk to airbags or electronic systems.

DIY attempts using coat hangers, wedges or improvised tools carry a real risk of scratching paintwork, tearing door seals, distorting the door frame or — on modern vehicles — triggering curtain airbags or damaging interior trim. The RAC and AA both advise against DIY vehicle entry attempts. A professional auto locksmith with the right tools is always the safer and often faster option.

Do stay calm and call a professional auto locksmith immediately
Do have your vehicle make, model and registration ready when you call
Do stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so
Don't attempt entry with a coat hanger, wire or improvised tool — risk of damage and airbag deployment
Don't call an unverified locksmith from a misleading local-number online listing — check credentials first
Don't break a window unless it is a genuine emergency — always attempt locksmith entry first

Call — tell us make, model & location
Matt answers personally. Tell us your vehicle make, model and exactly where you are. We give an accurate ETA and upfront price before leaving.
2
We travel with the right tools
Automotive entry tools for all major door configurations carried on the van. We arrive prepared for your specific vehicle, not with a one-size-fits-all approach.
3
Vehicle assessment before starting
We examine the door, lock and mechanism before attempting entry. We identify the correct approach for your specific vehicle to minimise any risk of contact with sensors or trim.
4
Non-destructive entry
A controlled gap is created between door and frame. A reach tool operates the interior release. In the vast majority of cases the door opens cleanly with no damage to seals, paintwork or the vehicle interior.
5
Keys retrieved & problem resolved
Keys retrieved from inside the car. If the key is broken, we extract it. If you need a spare cut to prevent this happening again, we can discuss spare car key cutting on the same visit. See: Auto Locksmith Hub
While you wait

What to Do While You Wait for a Car Locksmith

Being locked out of your car is stressful, especially at night, in bad weather or in an unfamiliar location. Here is how to handle the wait safely and make sure the locksmith who arrives is the real one you called.

Stay safe while waiting

If you are on a busy road or motorway, move away from the vehicle to a safe distance. If you are alone at night in an isolated location, stay in a well-lit area if possible. If you feel unsafe, call 999 before calling a locksmith. Your safety is the priority — the car can wait.

If you have a child or a pet locked inside the vehicle and they are in distress, call 999 immediately. The police can authorise breaking a window without waiting for a locksmith.

Rogue locksmiths — a real problem

The UK has a documented problem with misleading locksmith listings — companies that appear to have local numbers but actually operate nationally, charge vastly inflated prices on arrival or use unnecessary destructive entry. The Trading Standards Institute and NNAL have both published warnings about rogue locksmith operations. Always verify credentials before allowing anyone to work on your vehicle.

⚠ Warning Signs of a Rogue Auto Locksmith
Refuses to give a price over the phone — legitimate locksmiths always quote upfront
Arrives very quickly without having given a realistic ETA from a genuine local location
Goes straight to drilling without attempting non-destructive entry
Charges a dramatically different price from what was quoted on the phone
Cannot show an ID, DBS certificate or proof of trade membership on arrival
Has a local-area number that diverts to a national call centre
✓ What Inta-Lock Provides on Arrival
Photo ID and DBS certificate available to view
NNAL membership verifiable on the NNAL website
Price confirmed before leaving, no changes on arrival
Non-destructive entry always attempted first

FAQ

Car Lockout FAQs

How quickly can you reach me for a car lockout?

Call 01572 503203 with your location and we will give you an accurate ETA before leaving. Response time depends on your location within our coverage area and current traffic conditions. We cover Oakham, Rutland and 35 locations across the East Midlands. We aim to reach most Rutland locations quickly and give you a realistic time upfront — never an estimate we cannot keep.

Will you damage my car to get in?

No. Non-destructive entry is always the first approach. We use professional automotive entry tools that work by creating a controlled gap to operate the interior handle — with no contact with paintwork, window glass or seals. In the vast majority of car lockout situations the vehicle is opened without any damage whatsoever. The only time any form of destructive access would be discussed is if every other method is genuinely exhausted, and even then only with your explicit agreement before we proceed.

My key is broken in the door lock — can you get it out?

Yes. Inta-Lock carries specialist broken key extraction tools. The fragment is removed using a hook or extractor without damaging the lock barrel. Once extracted, we assess whether the barrel is undamaged and can discuss cutting a replacement key or programming a new one on the same visit. See: Car Key Replacement and Transponder Programming.

My child or pet is locked inside the car — what do I do?

If a child or pet is in distress, call 999 immediately. The police can authorise and assist with breaking a window in a genuine emergency without waiting for a locksmith. Call 01572 503203 at the same time — we will travel as fast as possible — but 999 is the immediate priority. If the child or pet is not in immediate distress but is locked inside, call 01572 503203 and we will attend as urgently as possible.

Can you help if my car uses keyless entry and the fob has stopped working?

Yes. Most cars with keyless entry also have a physical key blade for emergency access. We can gain entry using the blade and then diagnose the fob issue using our diagnostic equipment — often the fob needs reprogramming or the battery in the key is flat. If the key needs replacing entirely, we can programme a new key on the same visit. See: Transponder Key Programming and Lost Car Keys.

Can you cut me a spare key after getting me back into my car?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. A lockout is one of the clearest signals that a spare key is needed. After resolving the lockout, Inta-Lock can cut and programme a spare key for most vehicles on the same visit. See our Spare Car Keys page for full details on key types covered. A spare key prevents a repeat lockout and is significantly less expensive than another call-out. See also: Auto Locksmith HubFull FAQContact us
