Commercial Safe Installation in Oakham & Rutland
Businesses holding cash, sensitive documents, controlled substances, medication, data media or high-value stock need correctly rated, properly installed commercial safes. Inta-Lock supplies and installs commercial safes to the correct EN 1143-1 standard and cash rating for your business type and insurer requirements across Rutland, Leicestershire and the East Midlands.
What Commercial Businesses Must Understand About Safe Storage
A safe that is not rated for what you store, and not correctly installed, provides significantly less protection than you think — and may invalidate your commercial insurance claim entirely. Commercial insurers are precise about safe requirements. The wrong grade, the wrong cash rating or an incorrectly fixed safe can all result in a rejected claim after a break-in or theft.
Commercial safe requirements differ substantially from residential ones. The quantities of cash held, the nature of the contents (controlled substances, sensitive client records, data storage media), the regulatory environment (pharmacies, GP practices, solicitors, financial services) and the commercial insurer's policy schedule all determine exactly what standard of safe is required — and how it must be installed.
The European Safe Standard: EN 1143-1
The definitive standard for commercial safes in the UK and Europe is EN 1143-1, published by the European Committee for Standardization and formally adopted by the British Standards Institution (BSI). EN 1143-1 grades safes from Grade 0 (basic) through to Grade 6 (the highest security) based on resistance to attack testing by an accredited body. Each grade also carries a cash rating — the maximum value of cash the safe is certified to protect when correctly installed.
Commercial insurers specify a minimum grade and cash rating for any safe used to store items under a commercial policy. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) publishes guidance on safe grades and installation requirements for commercial premises. The Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SVTA) provides accreditation for safe engineers and maintains guidance on correct installation practice for commercial environments.
Why Installation Is as Important as the Safe Itself
The safe itself is only half the picture. A Grade 3 safe placed loosely on a floor is no more secure than a shoebox to a determined commercial burglar — it can simply be removed. Correct floor-fixing or wall-fixing using the appropriate fixings for the substrate (concrete, screed, timber joist, blockwork) is essential. Most commercial insurance policies require a safe to be fixed as a condition of cover, and will specify the minimum fixing method.
Inta-Lock assesses the proposed installation location, substrate type, access requirements and the specific insurer specification before recommending a safe and installation approach. We provide written confirmation of the safe grade, cash rating and fixing method for submission to your commercial insurer.

How Inta-Lock Handles a Commercial Safe Installation
Commercial safe installation is a structured process that starts with understanding what you need to store and ends with written documentation for your insurer. The intermediate steps — safe selection, site assessment, fixing method and installation — must all be done correctly for the installation to deliver its intended function and meet your policy conditions.
Inta-Lock does not simply supply a safe and leave you to install it. Every commercial safe installation includes a full site assessment, correct fixing to the appropriate substrate and handover with written documentation. Where your insurer has specified a particular grade, cash rating or fixing method, we confirm compliance in writing before leaving site.
We also install customer-supplied safes where the safe meets the minimum grade required for its intended purpose. If you have already purchased a safe, call 01572 503203 and we will confirm whether it meets your insurer's requirements and arrange installation.
For businesses that also need a safe opened — forgotten combination, lost keys, electronic fault or deceased estate access — see our Safe Installation & Opening page. For commercial premises needing additional security across door locks, see our Commercial Locks Upgraded page.

Commercial Safe Installation FAQs
What EN 1143-1 grade does my commercial insurer require?
This depends on your specific policy schedule. Most commercial retail and office insurers specify Grade I EN 1143-1 as the minimum. Pharmacies, premises holding higher-value stock or larger cash reserves may be specified at Grade II or above. Always check your policy schedule wording — it will specify the minimum grade, cash rating and usually the fixing requirement. Call 01572 503203 with your policy wording and we will confirm the correct safe type. See also: ABI guidance on commercial safes and the SVTA safe standards guidance.
Does the safe need to be bolted down for our insurance to be valid?
Yes, in virtually all commercial cases. Most commercial policies specify that a safe must be correctly fixed — floor-fixed or wall-fixed — as a condition of the cash and valuables cover applying. An unbolted safe under 300kg can be carried away in under a minute. Inta-Lock assesses the substrate on site and uses the correct rated fixings for each floor or wall type. We provide written confirmation of the fixing method.
We are a pharmacy — what specific safe do we need for controlled drugs?
Controlled drugs (Schedule 2 and 3) must be stored in a cabinet meeting the Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) Regulations 1973. The regulations specify minimum wall and door steel thickness, the type of hinge, the fixing method and the lock type. These requirements are separate from (and in addition to) your commercial insurer's requirements. Inta-Lock is DBS checked, familiar with the regulatory requirements and can supply and install a compliant controlled drug cabinet. Call to discuss your specific premises.
Can you install a safe we have already purchased?
Yes. Inta-Lock installs customer-supplied safes where the safe meets the minimum EN 1143-1 grade required for its intended purpose. Before installation we will ask to see the safe specification to verify the grade and cash rating. If the safe does not meet your insurer's minimum requirement, we will advise you before starting any work. Call 01572 503203 with the safe make and model and we can confirm suitability.
Can you provide written documentation of the safe installation for our insurer?
Yes. Inta-Lock provides written confirmation of the safe make, model, EN 1143-1 grade, cash rating, fixing method and substrate type after every commercial safe installation. This documentation is provided on the day of installation and is suitable for direct submission to your commercial insurer. We are used to producing this documentation and it is a standard part of every installation job.
Can you also open a commercial safe we have lost access to?
Yes. Inta-Lock provides commercial safe opening for forgotten combinations, lost keys, electronic lock failures and deceased estate access. Non-destructive opening is always attempted first.
